According to a 2006 report "Fish and chips on benches at the "bomb site" at Charing Cross could make way for the restoration of an old part of St Helier ... The States decided that it was more important to restore the "little historic gem" around Charing Cross than it was to retain the vacant site as open space. ... St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft asked Members to agree that the empty site on the intersection of York Street and Dumaresq Street should stay. ... He called the site a small square and suggested it be reinvented with trees, a new mural and perhaps a large chess board. ... but Members voted 33 to 11 against designating the area an important open space. ...
